Murray Edwards College

The College was founded as 'New Hall' in 1954 to bring more women of outstanding potential to Cambridge. At that time the University of Cambridge had the lowest proportion of women undergraduates of any UK university. So this foundation was intended to be exclusively for women in the hope that the number of female students in the University would increase. In 1954 its first intake numbered just 16 students.

In 1962, the Darwin family gave their family home 'The Orchard' to this fledgling College to give it a site of its own. Architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon were selected to design a new building and by 1964 it was able to move from its temporary site in Silver Street to a location capable of accommodating 300 students.

Following a generous donation of 30 million from Ros Edwards, a former student, and her family, New Hall could be endowed as a College proper, thus fulfilling the ambitions of its First President, Dame Rosemary Murray. So in 2008 it announced its permanent name of Murray Edwards College.
